Waiting for Godot

Hello Readers,

I am going to writedown this blog is part of our thinking activity given by our professor Heena Ma’am.In this blog I am going to answer some of the questions of the play “Waiting For Godot” written by Samuel Beckett. So who is  Samuel Beckett?

Samuel Beckett:

Samuel Barclay Beckett (13 April 1906 – 22 December 1989) was an Irish novelist, playwright, short story writer, theatre director, poet, and literary translator. A resident of Paris for most of his adult life, he wrote in both French and English.More Information.

Waiting for Godot Play:

Waiting for Godot is a play by Samuel Beckett in which two characters, Vladimir (Didi) and Estragon (Gogo), engage in a variety of discussions and encounters while awaiting Godot, who never arrives. Waiting for Godot is Beckett's translation of his own original French-language play, En attendant Godot, and is subtitled (in English only) "a tragicomedy in two acts" The original French text was composed between 9 October 1948 and 29 January 1949. The premiere, directed by Roger Blin, was on 5 January 1953 at the Théâtre de Babylone, Paris. The English-language version premiered in London in 1955. In a poll conducted by the British Royal National Theatre in 1998/99, it was voted the "most significant English language play of the 20th century.More information.

Characters:

Vladimir:

One of the two main characters of the play. Estragon calls him Didi, and the boy addresses him as Mr. Albert. He seems to be the more responsible and mature of the two main characters.

Estragon:

The second of the two main characters. Vladimir calls him Gogo. He seems weak and helpless, always looking for Vladimir's protection. He also has a poor memory, as Vladimir has to remind him in the second act of the events that happened the previous night.

Pozzo:

He passes by the spot where Vladimir and Estragon are waiting and provides a diversion. In the second act, he is blind and does not remember meeting Vladimir and Estragon the night before.

Lucky:

Pozzo's slave, who carries Pozzo's bags and stool. In Act I, he entertains by dancing and thinking. However, in Act II, he is dumb.

Boy:

He appears at the end of each act to inform Vladimir that Godot will not be coming that night. In the second act, he insists that he was not there the previous night.

Godot:

The man for whom Vladimir and Estragon wait unendingly. Godot never appears in the play. His name and character are often thought to refer to God.

1. What do you think about the characters of the play?

In my opinion the characters in this story are as follows.  The characters in Waiting for Godot Paly are portrayed in a very straightforward way, portraying them as ordinary people.  Bucket's character is portrayed as an existentialist.  In which nonsense has been given more space.  Along with the nonsense, it also shows meaningful things about life.  So let's talk about it here a bit.

The character within us is portrayed as absurd.  These first characters have been linked to existentialism.  Because it is not right to wait for what is not there or what cannot be seen, or to have a longing.  Because everything about them is absurdly connected.  Their every move leads to something like not doing something.  And which depicts the process going on in the life of the common man.  Man is always waiting for someone in his life or trying to get something.  So he gets nothing and fails.  Then despair arises in his mind.  The characters in this play do different things with their different objects in an absurd way.  Which shows that even in human life many people do such activities unnecessarily.  Which makes no sense, not even useful.

Time spend:

If you look at the other side of the characters in the play, they are shown to be supporting each other.  Because when a human is alone, he is completely silent. But Vladimir and his companion Estragon avoid their silence by talking to each other.  Spend their time accompanying each other.  I believe this leads to supporting each other in life.  So that we can spend our time well.

Help in life:

One thing to note about the character of both Vladimir and Estragon.  When Estragon forgets everything while Vladimir reminds him of everything.  That is to say, these characters show what a partner needs in human life.  There is always a need for a partner in human life.  Which is somewhat helpful to some and also requires one person to accompany.

Right Directions:

One thing is also shown in this play, what is the relationship between a master and his servant and what is the trust.  A master annoys his servant.  Yet his servant does not leave him in his bad times.  And accompanies it.  Pozzo's servant Lucky is well portrayed in this play.  When pozzo annoys his servant he tolerates everything as his servant.  But even when the pozzo goes blind, his servant Lucky does not leave him alone, he stays with him and he keeps pointing him in the right direction.

Waiting:

Waiting means hoping for someone to come.  Which is a matter applicable to every man of life.  Every man experiences this word following Dougal.  Some are waiting for their relatives, some are waiting for their friend, some are waiting for a spouse, some are waiting for a job, and some are waiting to leave this life.  Man has to wait from birth to death.  That is why the word "wait" is woven into human life. When we are waiting for someone, when that person or that thing is not found, despair arises in us.  And the same thing or person when we meet we have an anero enthusiasm.  Which represents existentialism in human life.  That man strives to get what he assumes, he is happy when he gets it, and he is sad when he does not get it.  Man is always 'waiting' for what he has not got in human life.  The characters inside this play are waiting for God.  But they are waiting for him forever.  Because what God is and whether He is or not is also a big question.  Waiting for them is a frustrating thing.  We can't even say for sure about their existence.

Godot:

God has been taken as that optimistic metaphor.  Because no one has seen God.  It is not even known whether God exists or not.  Yet everyone believes in them and lives in the hope that they will do something good.  That is to say, in this matter comes the subject of faith.  Humans have faith and trust in God.  They will finish our work and one day they will come.  We are saved from all these troubles.  Waiting for something to happen is called madness.  Maybe in this play God has a curiosity or hope in his life.  That the coming days in the future will be something good for them.  Which will bring something new into their lives. So this but God Kai does not come in the whole play.  It also proves that there is a question as to whether God exists or not.

2. What do you say about their activities and its significance?

Estragon shoes:

Estragon removes the shoe from his foot.  From that it can be said that he wants to remove the burden of life.  He wants to show that we are carrying a lot of weight in our lives.  We should remove it like this boot and throw it away.  Such an event is often seen within this play.  Therefore, it can be said that we should follow the ups and downs of life.  Such things happen in the lives of many people.  At first glance, it seems we are crazy.  But when we examine the reality behind them, we realize that such an event has taken place in their lives.  Which is why he is behaving like this.  Mentally, their condition is not good. Secondly, it can be said that they may be victims of unemployment.  So they have nothing to do but just this one thing.

Vladimir in hat

Vladimir takes off his hat.  It means he is shirking his responsibility.  If we look at the hat as a metaphor here.  Responsibility on the head.  Here you can see the price he wants to take when he takes off his hat.  He is waiting for Godot, which means he seems to be waiting for his own

death.  They are no longer interested in life.  And just wanting to sleep in a long nap itself might be it.

Tree Wait :

The play also features a tree.  Perhaps this tree is shown because it represents time.  As the seasons change, so do the leaves on the tree.  Over time, the trees are destroyed.  That is how human life is destroyed.  This tree also seems to be a godsend.  It has been standing still in one place for a long time.  As if waiting for someone. He will also be waiting for God with these two persons to deliver me from this life now.

Draw with a rope

Pozzo tries to keep his servant under his control by tying him to a rope.  Which makes him do different things.  As he dances, he is asked to bring something.  Which represents the matter of a servant.  How much the servant does for his master.  To please his boss, always be ready to help him.  In order to please his master, the servant can easily do things that he does not like. Pozzo himself is so ruthless that he gets the fruits of his deeds and finally he becomes blind.  But his servant does not forsake him and accompanies him even in his blindness.  That leads us to what humanity is still living.

Talking each other:

In this paly we see two characters talking to each other a lot.  His words are vain and dull.  Yet their words are reasonable to keep each other company.  While Vladimir and Estragon both company each other.  Then they have a lot of discussions with each other.  When Estragon falls asleep Vladimir tells him that please don't sleep.  Because I feel lonely.  You talk to me  So that both of us pass the time.  I wouldn't like to be alone if you fell asleep.  From this we can say that this story is about supporting each other. The situation in which loneliness is not experienced is placed in it.

3. Is there any similarity between the situations in the play and the lockdown period of 2020?

I have seen a lot of similarities between this play and the 2020 lockdown in Corona's pandemic.  Life seemed to have stopped all along.  One of the animals seemed to have met inside the cage.  The men had become difficult to save.  Where to talk about its existence.  Because the virus was spreading everywhere, without discriminating between rich and poor.  There was more despair than hope in men.  Both the rich and the poor were facing the disease, and were having trouble.  The poor walked 400, 500 kilometers to their homes.  Some poor people even starved to death.  The virus had spread so much that man's faith in God was now shattered.  The man was sitting in his house as there were lockdowns everywhere.  Some were on their way to work, some were on their way to exams, some were on their way to business.  So everyone in the world was waiting for something.  In particular, everyone was praying to God that the coronavirus would go away soon and that people would be healed soon.  The way the two characters in this play discuss absurdly the way Godot lives.  The same thing happened to everyone in the house.  All of them were doing all the activities in their respective homes whether they liked it or not.  Because no one had another option.

4.  Did you feel like existential crisis?

The existential crisis was seen in many ways within the villages, especially in the Lockdown of this Corona.  There was a greater crisis in food.  Food was not exchanged in the villages as the lockdown lasted for a long time.  Due to which there was not enough ration in the village.  Secondly, having to stay at home all day, the lights did not stay on for a long time, which caused a lot of problems.  They could not even go to the cities to sell their crops.  So this was a big crisis problem for the rural farmers.  Due to which the crops of the farmers failed.  They did not even get enough price for those crops.  So there was a big crisis in his income.  Due to which their families also faced crisis.  The students studying in the villages had to face many crises to study.  Because education was online and the Internet was unlikely to come to the villages.  Students living in villages also did not have enough Android mobiles.  Which I also had to face.

5. What did you do to pass time?

We spent my lockdown time at home.  Even in this lockdown, I have not been bored for a single day. Because I am very happy to have worked in all the days of lockdown.  My whole lockdown has been on the farm since the work was done on the farm.  Let's work on the farm from morning to evening.  Let's sit down and talk with the family in the evening.  Just all the days passed like this.  Because nothing else is going to come out.

6. How was your psychological condition?

Really suffered a lot mentally in this lockdown.  Because the lockdown happened on the same day when our B.Ed. exam was about to start.  And our BEd.  The Sem Four exam is pending.  Now when to take that exam? It was not decided.  And we didn’t even decide how we would prepare when it was taken.  So mentally his stress was high.  On the other hand, since there was nothing to come and go from home, staying in one place also made me a little mentally bored.  Working in the fields from morning to evening made me feel physically exhausted and mentally stressed in the evening.

A mentality was also bound up with Corona's disease.  He was also afraid.  Be careful not to let it happen to any relatives and it doesn't happen to us either.
