I.A.Richard thinking activity

Hello Readers,

This blog post is designed on the grounds of a task assigned by Prof. Dr. Dilip Barad Sir on techniques developed by I A Richards to analyze a poem/song/ film song lyric/hymns/ devotional songs or any poetic expression of any language in terms of verbal expressions. Click here to understand the views on the ‘Figurative Language’ of I A Richards.

Ivor Armstrong Richards (26 February 1893-  7 September 1979), known as I. A. Richards, was an English educator, literary critic, and rhetorician. His work contributed to the foundations of the New Criticism, a formalist movement in literary theory which emphasized the close reading of a literary text, especially poetry, in an effort to discover how a work of literature functions as a self-contained and self-referential æsthetic object.

According to I.A.Richard,

“For him the real value of a poem lies in the reactions and attitudes it creates, and whether or not it is conducive to greater emotional balance, equilibrium, peace and rest in the mind of the readers. For him, the value of a work of art lies in its power to harmonize and organize complex and warring human impulses into patterns that are lasting and pleasurable.” In the view of New Critics, all such considerations are extrinsic and they come in the way of the appreciation and evaluation of a work of art as it is in itself.

I.A.Richard says that, Poet can used either scientific or emotive use of language. Its only from last several use, scientific use is informed.

Richards goes on to examine different uses of the word ‘truth’. In the scientific use, the references are true and logical there is very little involvement of arts. Richards says that the term ‘true’ should be reserved for this type of uses – the scientific use. But the emotive power of the word is far too great for this. The temptations are there for a speaker who wants to evoke certain attitudes. So Richards goes on to consider the connotations of the word ‘truth’ in criticism. In literary criticism, the common use is ‘acceptability’ or ‘probability

The Importance of Words

Richards’ concerns are mainly focused on textual and verbal analysis. A close study of his works “Practical Criticism” and “The Meaning of the Meaning”.  According to him, words carry four types of meaning  -

SENSE

FEELINGS

TONE

INTENTION

Richards’ concerns are mainly focused on textual and verbal analysis. A close study of his works “Practical Criticism” and “The Meaning of the Meaning”.

Well, as a task, I have tried to do the verbal study of a selected (lyric) song from a Film of Taare Zameen Par.

Chaadar odhe ya khada koi

Hey.. dekho dekho kya wo ped hai

Chaadar odhe ya khada koi

Barish hai ya aasman ne

Chhod diye hain nal khule kaheen

Ho.. hum jaise dekhein yeh jahan hai vaisa hi

Jaisi nazar apni...

Khul ke sochein aao

Pankh zara failaao

Rang naye bikhraao

Chalo, chalo, chalo, chalo

Naye khwaab bun lein

Pankh zara failaao

Rang naye bikhraao

Chalo, chalo, chalo, chalo

Naye khwaab bun lein

Hey ae.. ae.. ae..

Jo itni sundar hai apni duniya

Oopar wala kya koi kalakaar hai

➡️We love to hear the lines above.  Because the lines spoken above are written in Kaligheli language.  From which we can say that this song may be about children.  It does not mention any child.  But when we speak those words, only one impression is formed in our mind and that is the childish language.  How he speaks when he is a small child.  What languages do older people call it?  So in these lines, if we say something to the child, it may be that the child likes to talk.

Dekho dekho kya wo ped hai

Chaadar odhe ya khada koi

Hey.. dekho dekho kya wo ped hai

Chaadar odhe ya khada koi

➡️If we take the symbol of the tree, it may also be to see the nature.

➡️Dekho dekho means to show something.  Here the tree is taken as a metaphor.  The baby does not know anything when it is born.  At first his parents try to teach him.  It is permeated by fingers and words.  So that knowledge comes into it.  He knows everything.  The second meaning we can take here is to show a man a true wait.  This is the way to go, this is the way of truth.

➡️If we take the sheet here as a metaphor.  To cover oneself means to acquire knowledge.  In the same way that we cover the sheet, we should also cover (absorb) knowledge.  While the sheet seems to work to protect our body in cold weather.  In the same way, the knowledge we have acquired in times of trouble can be useful.  Knowledge can also work in our business.

If we take the other meaning of the sheet.

"  જેટલી ચાદર પહોળી એટલા જ પગ લાંબા કરવા જોઈએ. "

The sheet is our status.  The skills we have.  The property we have etc.

Barish hai ya aasman ne

Chhod diye hain nal khule kaheen

➡️If we take rain as a metaphor, the knowledge given to children.  And children's brains if we take clouds as metaphor.  The way the rain in the cloud falls on the ground and makes the trees grow.  That is to develop the intellect (knowledge) of children from the storehouse of knowledge.  To awaken his mind.  Not even in the way of rain.  But in today's world, it is possible to give knowledge through taps, that is, to give knowledge of many subjects to children at once.

Ho.. hum jaise dekhein yeh jahan hai vaisa hi
Jaisi nazar apni...

➡️The mind is spoken in these lines.  In my opinion man has his own vision.  The way a man looks, the way he behaves.  Thoughts are like the way a man looks.  And the whole world looks the same to him.  We will feel better if we look at this world better.  But when we go to the same world badly, it will feel bad.  So we can see the world through our eyes.

Khul ke sochein aao

Pankh zara failaao

Rang naye bikhraao

Chalo, chalo, chalo, chalo

Naye khwaab bun lein

Hey ae.. ae.. ae..

Hey ae.. ae.. ae..

Hey ae.. ae.. ae..

Hey ae.. ae.. ae..

➡️Every child has different dreams.  She has a strong desire to do something different.  He has the ability to think of new things.  There are a lot of arts in it.  Just need to bring it out.  Which only a good teacher can bring out.  It has to provide the right environment.  So that he can develop himself, he can fly on his own.  Something new in the society, something new in the country, something new in the world is manifested.

Sa pa - sa pa

Dha re - dha re

Ga re - ga re

Ga ma pa sa - ga ma pa sa

Bum bum bum - bum bum bum

Bum Bum bum bole - bum bum bum bole

Hey bum chik bole - bum chik bole

Arre masti mein dole - masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

➡️These lines represent music.  Music is a symbol of peace.  If there is any kind of mental trace, listening to music immediately calms the mind.  Everyone loves listening to music.  A lot can be learned from music too.  There are so many flavors in music.  Also used in war in earlier times.  Children love to listen to music and it can help them to develop well.  The first thing kids like is music.  So music is a necessary medium to bring good education in it.  Tan, the mind begins to waver and listening to music becomes a different kind of pleasure.

➡️Imagination is spoken of in these lines.  In which it is said to think not only by looking but also by thinking something different.  Fish can never fly in the sky.  It’s hard work if you want to blow it up.  In this sentence we have to show even the most difficult work.  And that work can be done through education.  Can be done from the imagination of the students.  Secondly, bathing in the sun is an impossible thing.  That work is also very difficult.  Which can only be done through imagination i.e. depends on thoughtfulness.  I believe that the concept of how to bring new ideas to children and how to provide them with new imagination takes place within these lines. Like the stars, if someone interferes in our work, we should not listen to him.  Because the stars are many and the hero in them is one.  The way the stars are tamed, a lot of people in the society will be barking at what they are doing well.  That is why it is said to be as bright as the sun, not to twinkle like the stars.

O rat rat ke kyon tanker full
[Tanker full, tanker full]
Aankhein band to dabba gul
[Dabba gul, dabba gul]
Oya band darwaaze khol re
[Khol re, khol re, khol re]
Ho ja bindas bol re
[Bol bol bol bol re]

➡️There has been talk of exams within these lines.  Mind is shown here as a tanker metaphor.  Because when it is time to take the exam, the students tend to cramming  more at once. And whenever they have to write, they will come back vomiting.  When he forgets a word, from which he forgets everything.  So we do not need such education.  We have to prepare mentally fit and intelligent people.  So they have to develop their minds to prepare the person.  The arts in them have to be brought out. The  cramming is the tanker of his mind has made him full.  It has to be emptied.  We are not going to make to learn by to rote  students, but we have to prepare a frameworker who can understand and explain well. He has fixed the idea of cramming in his mind.  It opens the door and instills new ideas in it.  The child is always thoughtful.  He has to give it the right way

Main bhi hoon - main bhi hoon

Tu bhi hai - tu bhi hai

Ho main bhi, tu bhi, hum sab mil ke

Bum chik, bum bum chik, bum bum chik

Bum chik, bum bum chik, bum bum chik

Bum bum bum bum bum bum

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

➡️Within these lines we find a symbol of unity.  The last thing schools and teachers do is make us all stay together. You are here and I am here too.  We are all one and are going to do good work together.  There is a verse in Sanskrit.

સાથે રમીએ, સાથે જમીએ,સાથે કરીએ સારાં કામ,

સાથે રહીને બહાદુર બનીએ, જેથી રીજે  શ્રી ભગવાન.

There is a sentence in the Upanishads which is shown as follows.

वसुदेव कुटुंबकम।

Umashankar Joshi's Gujarati poem goes so far as to say that we are not one human being in the whole world. But there is a lot connected with human beings.  Which is all to be called the world.

વિશાળે જગ વિસ્તારે નથી એક જ માનવી પશુ છે પંખી છે ને વનોની છે વનસ્પતિ.....

Aisi rangon bhari apni dunia hai kyun

Socho to, socho na

Pyaar se chun ke in rangon ko

Kisi ne sajaya yeh sansar hai

Jo itni sundar hai apni duniya

Oopar wala kya koi kalakaar hai

Khul ke sochein aao

Pankh zara failaao

Rang naye bikhraao

Chalo chalo chalo chalo chalo chalo chalo chalo

Chalo chalo chalo chalo naye khwaab bun lein

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

➡️The creator of the beautiful thing within these lines has been appreciated.  Whoever makes a good thing or good things should be praised.  Only an artist can create such a wonderful world.  God is not mentioned in these lines.  But he has been portrayed as an artist.  An artist can make the world or anything very beautiful and good with the art inside him.  There is an artist hidden inside every man.  Just need to get it out.  The thing that makes us think is who created this colorful world, how great the creator really will be.  How much time and how much care is required to make such a good painting. So how much care must have been taken by the person who created this world?  How would the world be made?  All the questions are like what we think.

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

Bum bum bole masti mein dole

Bum bum bole masti mein tu dol re

Oye bum bum bole

➡️These last lines in the poem are showing happiness.  When a man is happy, something like this is sung.  Which leads us to an atmosphere of happiness throughout the poem.  At the same time, there is a lot to learn.  This poem may have been written especially for children and for their education.  What are the current problems in education and what changes need to be made in that education?  It is from this poem that we get an estimate.  Perhaps this poem can make a good impression in the world of education.  A lot of things have been used as symbols in this poem to bring about a change in education and a method that students are interested in learning.
